What is the name of your Farm, Ranch, or Homestead?
We (The Polder Family of Old World Kitchen by Polder’s Old World Market) live at the beautiful 115 acre Stonewall Spring Farm in the mountains.
Where are you located?
Lee County, Virginia
My family began homesteading on our 1/3 acre property in a lakeside community in Florida 12 years ago. We didn’t really know much about farming, so we started out small with square foot gardening, raising chickens, and meat rabbits. We poured over books and articles to learn as much as we could to begin living out our lifelong dreams of farming and living off the land.
What do you grow and/or raise?
We raise Jersey milk cows, Angus beef cattle, honey bees, pigs, and chickens.
What traditional methods do you use on your farm to grow your crops and/or raise your animals?
Though we do not have a “certified organic” farm, we have always used the most natural and old-fashioned methods possible.
What is one of your favorite farm-infused recipes you wish to share?
Pepper Jelly from the Ball Blue Book of Canning, using my Dad’s homegrown habanero peppers.
Putting in a garden of veggies and herbs for our family meals, preserving, and sharing with friends.
What words of inspiration or uplifting wisdom do you hope to impart on the future generation of farmers, ranchers, beekeepers, and homesteaders?
“Be brave, you only get to live life once. Don’t be afraid to follow God when He arranges your circumstances to give you the opportunity of a lifetime. It wont be easy and it will almost certainly be terrifying at times, but it will be worth it.” (a quote from my sister , Loran Polder)
